If you’re anything like me, as soon as you read the words Last Christmas you immediately get the catchy 80s pop song stuck in your head. It’s one of the most popular Christmas songs of all time, and finally made it to Christmas number one in 2023 (it only took 39 years).
The light-hearted music video features George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley (the core members of Wham!), back-up singers Pepsi DeMacque-Crockett and Shirlie Holliman, model Kathy Hill, and there’s even a cheeky cameo from Spandau Ballet star Martin Kemp. There are bouncy 80s blow-dries galore and everything you could want in a winter getaway, from a gondola ride up a mountain to a friendly snowball fight. So wholesome.
If you fancy getting in on the action and are wondering where Last Christmas was filmed, we’ve got all the deets.
Where was Last Christmas filmed?
While the snow-capped mountains and frosty trees make it seem like a picture-perfect Nordic wonderland, the Last Christmas video was actually filmed in the Swiss Alps. But not just anywhere in Switzerland – this epic shoot took place in the picturesque town of Saas-Fee, known for its charming village vibe and dazzling views. Nestled in the heart of the Alps, Saas-Fee boasts a backdrop of snow-covered peaks and narrow streets that scream “holiday spirit”, making it the perfect setting for Wham!’s festive, fun-filled video.
Saas-Fee
Saas-Fee is a beloved destination for skiing, snowboarding, and anyone with a love for snow. But back in 1984, it was also a dreamy location for a pop group ready to make holiday magic (and one of the only places in Europe where snow was guaranteed that November). The band chose this spot for its clear, crisp mountain air and its undeniable alpine charm. Filming in the Swiss Alps wasn’t just about capturing the natural beauty — it was about capturing that winter vibe of care-free fun, with a dash of romance and lots of intense, meaningful looks across the table.
Walliserhof Grand Hotel & Spa
This five-star chalet-style hotel is where the stars and film crew stayed during the filming of Last Christmas in 1984. In true pop star style, George had an entire apartment on the top floor, which has since been renamed ‘the George Michael suite’. It’s now decorated with photos and albums in tribute to the musician, and from the balcony there are breath-taking views of snow-covered mountains.

Chalet Schliechte
Picture this: it’s 1984, and George Michael, Andrew Ridgeley, and the crew are all bundled up in winter clothes, surrounded by snow-covered trees, alpine chalets, and a lot of fun-loving extras. Between takes, George Michael was known to crack jokes, making sure the whole crew was in high spirits (and hopefully warm). One of the most iconic scenes is when George is seen singing along while sitting atop a snowbank, while another is when the friends all have a cheerful snowball fight. These scenes were shot outside Chalet Schliechte. It’s nestled just outside the centre of Saas-Fee in Wildi, and these days can be rented out as a multi-bedroom apartment.
Felskinn cable car
A trip to the Alps wouldn’t be complete with a ride up the mountain in a cable car. In the video, the gang take this cable car up to their chalet, equipped with skis and classic Moon Boots (which are very much in right now). From the top of the Felskinn cable car, you can ride the world’s highest underground funicular, the Metro Alpin, which goes up to 3,457m. Once you’re at the top, you can treat yourself to a meal at Allalin, which is the world’s highest revolving restaurant (does it get any more 80s than a revolving restaurant?)
Why Saas-Fee is still a winter hotspot
Fast forward to today, and Saas-Fee remains a hidden gem for skiers and snow-lovers alike. Fans of the Last Christmas video often make the pilgrimage to this Swiss village, snapping photos by the iconic spots where Wham! filmed those unforgettable scenes. In addition to offering unbeatable skiing, the town retains its old-world charm with a welcoming atmosphere and a relaxed, festive vibe year-round. In fact, if you happen to visit during the holiday season, you might even feel like you’ve stepped right into the Wham! video — snowballs, chalets and all.
