Each nail has a head, shaft and tip. It also has a specific purpose. Here’s what you should know about nail design, materials and surface finish:
Head.
A flat, round head provides a wide target, maximum grip and makes it easier to remove the nail.
Shaft.
The shaft or body of the nail. A smooth shaft is easy to hammer in; shafts with ring-shaped rings, threads, grooves or twists have a larger surface area and provide a stronger, more durable grip.
Common nails are used for general construction work and specifically for framing and other structural work. They have a thick shaft, a wide head and a diamond-shaped tip. They are most commonly used on 2 x dimensional wood. Their thickness makes them strong, but also more prone to cracking in the wood compared to thinner nails. Some carpenters blunt the nail tip to prevent splitting of the wood, although this means that the tip tears the wood fibres, thereby slightly reducing the holding power.
To avoid splitting when nailing in hardwood, drill a pilot hole that is slightly smaller than the nail diameter.
If you cannot drill a hole, blunt the tip of the nail with the hammer.
Galvanised nails have undergone a special electroplating process in which they are coated with a zinc layer to form a protective barrier.

Common nails – they are used for general construction work and especially for framing and other structural work. The head is designed to accommodate the pointed tip of a nail set, making it easier to sink the nail without slipping and hollowing out the wood.
Advantages – The thickness of the nails makes them strong, but also more prone to splitting wood compared to thinner nails. Some carpenters blunt the nail tip to prevent splitting of the wood, although this means that the tip tears the wood fibers, slightly reducing the holding power.
Zinc plated – galvanised steel nails are steel nails coated with a zinc-based product. The zinc coating provides extra protection and durability and prevents the formation of rust for a long time.
Universal use: they are most commonly used with 2 x dimensional wood for indoor and outdoor applications, trim and for nailing door frames and trims.
Installation – Use a power tool or a hammer. Size: nail diameter – 4 mm. Length – 100mm Pack of 50
